KINGSWAY CHRISTIAN CHURCH originally started in Ottawa, ON. in 1983 and held services in the area until it "hibernated" in the year 2000. It was always the desire of the leaders of KCC for church plants to be a reality, if not in Ottawa, to wherever the Lord will lead them.
It was on 2011 that the late Bro. Josue Delacruz, then, KCC elder and chairman of the board, who was also instrumental in planting the North York Church of Christ (NYCC), expressed his desire to have a church plant in Scarborough. This was unmistakably the finger of God working as the person that he spoke to, had been praying for a while for an opportunity to start a church within the community where he resides, Scarborough. With the vision still clearly being shown to us by God from the onset of the church plant up to the present, the leadership of KCC continues to grow and thrive in the faith and in numbers. One component at a time, we renovated the place of worship, and we added musical instruments and sound systems as needed. We were blessed by brethren from Westway Christian Church and Mississauga Center Church of Christ who donated their almost brand new equipment to us. It's still is in use to date. We first rented a place called Sta. Rosa Restaurant in July 2013 then moved to 501 Passmore the following year.
The first annual planning and retreat was done in January of this year at the Ontario Christian Assembly campsite. In May of 2024, KCC finally found an affordable place of worship with rooms for the children’s department and a worship and fellowship hall enough to accommodate a growing congregation.
It was in this year the first Membership Class 101 was held led by Pastor Cosme. New believers were baptized and the Lord added to the growth of the church. Bro. Alfie Hilario was appointed as the new worship leader. His team composed of Synthia (drums), Psalm (Bass) and Elsa (audio/video).
As the church continue to grow, we held outdoor fellowships that doubled as track and flyer distribution in parks close to the church. We had our fishing fellowship in Omemee. The first movie night was also held. It was well attended and we were able to establish good relationships with the visitors who later became members of the congregation.
We grew in faith and in numbers as the Lord added to the church those who are being saved. Souls were being baptized and we continue to grow. Another Membership Class 101 was held spread out into four consecutive weeks. It was also in this year that the first worship workshop was held. Worship teams from Keele Street Christian Church and North York Church of Christ collaborated with our worship team. It was in this year that Brother Emerson Rivera and Sister Jeane Umali were added to the Education Ministry of the church. Bro. Emerson taught the adult Bible class while Sis. Jeane took charge of the children’s department. It was also during this year that Terry Nathan Burke took on the role of the video and mixing console during worship services enabling the congregation to focus more on worshiping and listening to God and His word as it was being preached.
It was in this year that Pastor Royce Tanedo and family started attending KCC and then have pledge their membership in January of the following year. His son David started to actively lead worship as well. Pastor Royce was also our resource and replacement preacher and teacher during time when the lead pastor was on vacation. It was also in this year that a group was formed to find a bigger place of worship as the lease was about to end in a year’s time.
As the lease agreement for 501 Passmore was to end in May, the church formed a search committee for a new place of worship. We thought that we have outgrown our current place and wanted a more accessible location. A place that is more accessible to public transportation and one that is closer to the heart of Scarborough, Toronto. It was then, that God led us to 1646 Victoria Park Ave., units 5 & 6. It was then that we were again blessed with another voluntary commitment of Bro. Raymart “Botz” Caysido, as a new guitarist to the worship team. Together with the worship team he effectively leads the church to heartfelt and meaningful worship each Sunday. This year was also one of the hardest in the life of the church as our dear Administrative Pastor and Chairman of the Board, Bro. Josue Delacruz had gone with the Lord.
It was in this year that Pastor Cosme Cabalteja formed the KCC Pastoral Team. It was also in March of this year that Pastor Allan Portugal (pulpit) as added to the membership of the church as well as a member of the Pastoral Team together with Pastors Royce Tanedo (Admin), Emerson Rivera (Care Ministry) and Junel Gabrino (Worship). Planning for the 7th anniversary of the church was held and while everything was going on, the Covid 19 pandemic hit. Worship services were held via Zoom live streaming including midweek bible studies. Despite the restrictions, the church continued to grow. Bro. Psalm and his wife Sis. Czerysh became very active in the church. This husband-and-wife tandem laid down and finished the laminate floors of the worship hall while everyone was confined in their homes due to the lock downs.
As the lockdowns and restrictions continue, the worship team took advantage of it and kept honing and enhancing their talents for the Lord. We have upgraded our equipment and instruments which greatly improved our online live streaming presence. Sister Czerysh Cabalteja started leading the worship team and the youth after giving birth to their first child, Selah Cabalteja.
At the start of the year, the King’s Groups (cell groups) were formed. Pastor Emerson Rivera led the East Kings Group while Pastor Allan Portugal led the West Kings Group. A worship workshop was conducted in March this year, then by mid-year the first KCC worship album produced by our very own worship team was launched. All the songs were written and recorded by the worship leaders.
There were a quite a few exciting events that happened this year. KCC was about to celebrate their 10th anniversary since it was re-launched. The anniversary committee looked into renting an event’s place which would be to accommodate visitors from neighbouring churches within the Greater Toronto Area and even from beyond Ontario and the United States of America. By Fall of this year, the annual planning was done at Calabogie Resort where all the ministry leaders and came for the retreat and planning for the next year. Another team was also created to look into acquiring another place of worship as we have then outgrown our current worship hall.
